ABSTRACT

Good speakers rely on listening to make meaning from what they hear. This chapter recommends classroom practices that support strategies for increasing individual vocal capacity in every K-12 classroom. Concentrating on the integration of digital media applications provides an exceptional opportunity to encourage learners to speak and receive immediate feedback, often in conjunction with a visual project. The writing process assists learners to identify, formulate, and provide high-quality feedback. Through the use of carefully constructed rubrics, role-playing and practice, learners can become helpful readers to developing writers. Engaging students in active identification of those traits that will improve their speech, and then having them practice those traits in an active learning environment are direct methods for improving student performance. Teachers from every discipline can contribute to their students' development of poise, confidence, and power by employing direct technical instruction that promotes the use of the human voice and body as a speaking and communication instrument.
