ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how the deliberate and strategic inclusion of literacy integration needs to be part of formal curriculum planning. The Curriculum Mapping review process is the seventh essential strategy for developing active literacy within the schools. Curriculum Mapping is a remarkable, technologically based vehicle for integrating the other strategies presented in the chapter. People can focus on varying the three types of vocabulary, editing and revision strategies, creative notetaking, discussion types models, or speaking skills opportunities. They can integrate digital tools and create media-making opportunities, and global connections. Twenty-first-century tools are solving the age-old problem of making active literacy possible in every classroom K–12. Teachers from every discipline can use Curriculum Mapping as a unifying school-wide vehicle to develop formal benchmark assessments to ensure active classical and contemporary literacy in every subject and for every grade level.
