ABSTRACT

This chapter employs PERMA, Seligman's model of wellbeing, as the framework to merge the principles of positive psychology with the field of art therapy because it seemed to fit most logically with the way it had unfolded for positive art therapists. Exploring the intersection between positive psychology and art therapy over the last 10+ years has had profound impact on art therapists' professional practice. The chapter provides a brief review of how art therapists facilitate trainings with "non-client" populations. Art therapists shares their own observations about the unique qualities they noticed among the individuals, the teams, and the group as a whole. Compassion fatigue is a condition in which healthcare workers experience vicarious trauma as a result of caring for people who have witnessed or experienced trauma. Compassion fatigue produces symptoms similar to PTSD—anxiety, disconnection, depersonalization, somatization, and depression. The chapter then outlines five domains of self-care—physical, emotional, psychological, professional, and spiritual—and provides activities designed to address each.
