ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on three researchers namely Amy Devitt, Vijay Bhatia, and Leena Louhiala-Salminen who pioneered the work on intertextuality and interdiscursivity in Business English. It looks at the interactions that researchers have identified between spoken and written forms of communication in the modern business world, together with the interactions between discourse activities and corporate activities. The chapter also looks at the consequences that these findings have for teaching Business English. It then profiles the work of two scholars based in Hong Kong namely Martin Warren and Winnie Cheng, who have taken an English for Specific Purposes approach in investigating the intertextual and interdiscursive references that business people working within specific professions make in the course of their work. In light of technological developments in business communication, the chapter considers the need to promote Business English students familiarity with new media, as well as their use in discourse activities in which Business English is used.
