ABSTRACT

This chapter looks in detail at the different groups of people that are involved in Business English interactions in contemporary business settings. It defines the terms International Business English and Business English as a Lingua Franca as specific types of Business English. The chapter shows how the study of International Business English and Business English as a Lingua Franca has become increasingly relevant for English for Specific Purposes, and also therefore for the development of appropriate Business English teaching materials. It says that the distinction is important because Business English Lingua Franca interactions are sometimes more successful than International Business English interactions. The chapter also discusses a number of studies on communication in business contexts by researchers who are also involved in teaching Business English that usefully bridge the gap between international business practices and the Business English classroom.
