ABSTRACT

When it has been recognized that a major business process requires radical re-assessment, business process re-engineering or re-design (BPR) methods are appropriate. BPR was launched on a wave of organizations needing to completely re-think how and why they do what they do in order to cope with the ever-changing world, particularly the development of technology based solutions. BPR is often based on new possibilities for breakthrough performance provided by the emergence of new enabling technologies. The most important of these, the one that is the nominal ingredient in many BPR recipes, is IT. The potential of IT when used across industry sectors is best described relative to its use within the sector. It was found that most applications of IT have been confined to a single sector. For organizations within the supply chain to capture benefits available as a result of inter-organizational integration, they need to go through a shared cycle of learning and change.
