ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the process and contents of Tier 2 interventions. These are interventions that are typically delivered in groups to students who have shown a need for more mental health support than Tier 1 services provide. The chapter reviews tools that can be used for progress monitoring. The purpose of Tier 2 school-based mental health (SMH) services is to prevent the development of more serious mental health concerns among students who are demonstrating subclinical levels of a mental health disorder or have known mental health risk factors. The SMH planning team will need to establish specific criteria for determining which students warrant additional assessment from the universal screening data. The Anger Coping Program is a manualized school-based anger management program for at-risk youth demonstrating reactive aggression, peer rejection, and/or poor interpersonal skills. The program is designed for youth aged 8– 12 and is delivered in a group format with four to six students.
