ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidelines for establishing and implementing cognitive behavioral therapy-based groups at Tier 2. It describes the group therapy that can be delivered in a structured, nonmanualized format. The chapter discusses the ideas that are applied to group therapy, whether it is delivered in a manualized or nonmanualized format. It begins with the stories of three students for school-based group therapy and how being seen in a group setting influenced the outcomes for each student. Subsequently, the chapter discusses the unique nature of the group counseling context and how groups can provide opportunities for growth. It discusses practical considerations related to forming therapy groups in the school context, including the logistics of conducting needs assessment, arranging space and schedules, choosing whom to put in a group together, and how to get a group started. The chapter discusses troubleshooting problems that may arise in the groups.
