ABSTRACT

We have already seen that the Naive View which suggested that the argument about the nature of the given was an empirical one, must be rejected. On the other hand, even though the different theories did not seem to be meaning the same thing when they make use of the expression 'the given', they did leave the impression that there is some real issue between them. In casting around for leads as to the nature of this real point of issue, we have so far found only an indication that different views regarding the role of thought in perception and the 'nature of thought' might be involved.
