ABSTRACT

What is the upshot o f all this? First, it seems we must accept the unexceptionable principle that before I can answer how I know that I’m x, I must know why I say that I’m x. Hence, any reason I may have for so saying cannot be systematically denied my hearer and still be an aspect o f the meaning, purpose, function or intention o f my speech act. Reasons so restricted could only be systematically ulterior to any speech act o f mine, i.e. unrelatable to it.
