ABSTRACT
The Study Group on Foundations of Cultural Unity was organized in 1964-65 by Michael Polanyi, Edward Pols and the present editor. With the help of grants by the Ford Foundation to Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, which we here grate fully acknowledge, we held two week-long meetings, in August 1965 and 1966, both at Bowdoin. A statement of our general purpose follows this foreword, and the present volume collects a number of the papers which were discussed during the ’65 and ’66 conferences.
