ABSTRACT

The failure of the Meyerson-Abdallah talks to prevent Transjordan's involvement in the first Arab-Israeli war was the final episode in a long series of futile attempts made during the Mandate period by Arab and Zionist leaders who wished to resolve their differences through diplomacy. The persistence and further deterioration of the Arab-Israeli conflict since the days of the British Mandate have given birth to a number of explanations, and it is hoped that this study will shed some light on several of these theories.
