ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys the many methods developed within linguistic anthropology and related fields for collecting and analyzing data about language through-around-about-as food in present day foodscapes and linguistic landscapes around the world. These include participant observation, interviews and focus groups, the ethnography of SPEAKING and FEEDING, discourse analysis, and methods developed for the study of how alimentary and linguistic competence are socialized. Ethical issues involved in conducting research with human subjects and representing the findings about sensitive issues such as food and language are reviewed. The vignettes in this chapter are written by the book’s authors, focusing in particular on their research experience with food-and-language socialization.
