ABSTRACT

The finite element method is one of the most powerful methods for solving differential equations including partial differential equations, which apply over complex shapes with complex boundary equations. The method requires powerful computers together with the appropriate computer programs. The method requires powerful computers together with the appropriate computer programs. The method described here demonstrates how to determine the stiffness matrix of an in-plane triangular plate element. The same method can be used for the more complex problems involving shell and solid elements. This chapter shows to: understand what a load vector is for an in-plane plate, understand what a displacement vector is for an in-plane plate and understand what an elemental stiffness matrix is for an in-plane plate. It also shows to: determine a shape function, determine a load vector for a complex shape and determine a stiffness matrix for a complex shape, such as a triangle.
