ABSTRACT

By 1967 guerrilla warfare waged from Syria had reached new dimensions. Nasser claimed that in May 1967 these Israeli warnings to Syria went so far as to threaten to overthrow the Damascus government. The statement said that Israeli commanders announced they would carry out military operations against Syria in order to occupy Damascus and overthrow the Syrian Government. Eilat has been the major growth point in the south of Israel since the end of the Egyptian blockade of the Straits of Tiran in 1956. Domestically, the continued development of Eilat, which depends on its growth as a port, is also the key to the development of the Southern Negev. As communications southwards are built up to meet the port's growing needs, and as the increase in its population leads to increased generating capacity and water supplies, so the civilization of the surrounding biblical wilderness laps out in spreading waves.
