ABSTRACT

This chapter overviews how digital recording works, explores 2-track digital recorders, and explains multitrack digital recorders. In a digital recorder, the record-level meter is a peak-reading digital meter whose display is made of LEDs, LCDs, or pixels. Each digital audio device has a clock or internal oscillator that sets the timing of its samples. A digital audio network is a connection system between multiple digital audio devices. A computer can control distant power amplifiers over a network and send digital audio to them. One form of digital recording uses a recordable compact disc. Handheld flash memory recorder is a portable 2-track digital recorder that records onto a flash memory card such as a compact flash or secure digital (SD) card. Computer digital audio workstation (DAW) is a computer running recording software and a connected audio interface that gets audio into and out of the computer.
