ABSTRACT

While the Monarch is titular head of the government and all government acts are carried out in the name of the Crown, the role of the Queen is largely, but not completely, formal and ceremonial. In the study of the government it is necessary to bear in mind that the United Kingdom remains a constitutional monarchy and that the Crown is the symbolic head of the executive, legislature and judiciary. The remaining prerogatives of the Crown have been discussed in Chapter 5 , which should be referred to for discussion of the Crown’s role in the appointment of the Prime Minister.
