ABSTRACT

The grant covered the PH design fees and the cost of post-occupancy monitoring of the home's actual energy use. Around that same time, a client who wanted a very low-energy, single-family house approached Zero Energy Design (ZED) Architects. When this client found out he could get a PH without having to pay for the design fees, he was extremely so enthusiastic that he modified their contract to say: This house has to be a certified PH or this contract will be terminated. With this mutually beneficial arrangement, the second certified PH in Korea got built in the city of Insane. The Insane PH, whose gross floor area is 220 m2, blends traditional Korean architectural values with such PH design features as a compact form. As natural ventilation is a cultural preference in Korea, ZED made sure to design in cross-ventilation strategies. Professor Lee has been and continues to be a pioneer in building very energy-efficient residential buildings in Korea.
