Philanthropic activity is evident in every historical era and in every society that has been studied across the globe. It is also promoted by every major religion and is a core component of secular humanitarianism. Its omnipresence often goes unremarked, reflecting what we might call (adapting Hannah Arendt’s famous phrase), the “banality of benevolence.”
