ABSTRACT
Philanthropy is easier to describe than to explain, but when explaining it is less difficult to uncover the reasons why large donations were made. Large donations leave more traces than small ones, in the form of celebratory poems, speeches, contemporary accounts, paintings, coats of arms, obituaries and wills. Records of this kind are less likely in the case of small donations.
