ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a broad approach to brain injury that would normally be led by health authorities. To reduce the number of brain injuries it is necessary to look at their causes in the immediate community. Different communities will have different resources available to them. Some may have access to hospitals with specialised services and clinics, while others may only have a local clinic and staff trained in primary care. Public health refers to all organized measures to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong life among the population as a whole. Many players are involved in preventing initial brain injuries and subsequent injuries. Identifying the causes of brain injury and repeated brain injury is not as simple as it sounds. For every objective cause, such as smoking and the misuse of alcohol, there are many subjective factors influencing people's decisions.
