ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on public health initiatives that can help prevent brain injury and the causal factors, such as alcohol misuse, associated with it. Despite the many obstacles and challenges, there are success stories to serve as guidance and inspiration when it comes to community-based brain injury prevention strategies and public awareness campaigns about the brain and brain injury. In relation to prevention strategies, it may come as a surprise to discover that people also need to think about crime given its well-evidenced link with traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI can result in loss of social inhibitions and increased aggression, thereby raising the level of violence and criminal behaviour within communities. Evidence from other countries supports the relationship between brain injury and crime. It is very important to establish a workable, practical plan whereby families and communities are empowered to develop projects that target their needs and are thus not completely reliant on professionals to accomplish such goals.
