ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some stanzas from the poem The Defence of Lucknow written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The poem contains a wide variety of rich literature from before the war and was designed to give soldiers entertainment. It specifically focuses on the Siege of Lucknow, which was one of the most terrible incidents of the Indian Mutiny. The incident was prolonged for 87 days and was finally relieved by General Campbell on Nov. 16, 1857. After two successive relief attempts had reached the city, the defenders and civilians were evacuated from the residency, which was then abandoned.
