ABSTRACT

The Tran dynasty of Viet-nam set up the Cham prince, Che Nang, as puppet ruler of Champa, the emperor, Tran Anh-tong, followed the usual procedure and abdicated in favour of his son, Tran Minhtong. The Tran dynasty promoted the rise of literature using the Chinese language as its medium, but much of the work produced during the Tran dynasty period has perished. A bibliographical list was drawn up last century by the great historian Phan Huy Chu and includes manuals of ritual, legal codes, and military treatises. The art of the Nguyen period only begins with the reign of the emperor Gia-long, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and is found chiefly at Hue. The architectural style of the imperial palaces, which have recently been in large part destroyed, shows traces of the great influence of the Chinese style of building in Peking.
