ABSTRACT

as mentioned in an earlier chapter, the Tran dynasty of Viet-nam set up the Cham prince, Che Nang, as puppet ruler of Champa; but when, in 1314, the emperor, Tran Anh-tong, followed the usual procedure and abdicated in favour of his son, Tran Minhtong, Che Nang seized the opportunity to make an attempt to reconquer the Cham provinces north of the Col des Nuages. The attempt failed, and in 1318 Tran Minh-tong removed Che Nang and put in his place a military commander named Che A-nan. But he in turn made a determined effort to become independent, and called upon Mongol aid. After a victory over Vietnamese troops in 1326 he did in fact free himself from Tran domination, and ceased to pay tribute. It was during his reign that Champa was visited by the Franciscan monk Oderic de Pordonone. 1
