ABSTRACT

Terrorism in the countryside is totally unlike terrorism in urban areas, and this divide is important in understanding modern terrorism. The same groups may operate in both areas but use different methods. The key differences arise from the physical environments in city and country. In a city, there are usually crowds, and security forces are rarely far away. Urban terrorists must move secretly, strike quickly, and then hide again. If properly handled, a single dramatic act by an urban terrorist group in a major city can attract headlines worldwide.
