ABSTRACT

The story reflects the political landscape changed after 1975, many aspects of life remained the same, including long-standing problems with poverty and the kinds of social solidarity. Outhine Bounyavong was among the most significant authors of contemporary Laos, one who wrote through the numerous calamities and changes that beset his homeland during his lifetime. The nature of the new regime also had a strong impact on Lao writers for many found themselves compelled to work for state-controlled cultural institutions of various types. Outhines stories reflect on how people interact with one another, their virtues and flaws. In Sacrifice we do not find a strong narrative line taking the reader from a definitive starting point to a conclusion. Rather, we have a narrator who interacts with a variety of members of Lao society as he passes them along the side of the road, first on a bicycle, and later on a borrowed motorcycle.
