ABSTRACT
The resumption of IUOE membership growth is reassuring to all who value the role of employee organizations in American life, and the lessons therefrom are worth noting. But those lessons are meaningful primarily in the context of craft unionism, the crucible out of which the U.S. labor movement originally emerged but which is largely ig-nored in most contemporary discussions of labor-management relations policy.
