ABSTRACT

To understand the role of the university as developer, it is important to investigate the issues that affect a university's acquisition and development practices and how these issues manifest themselves in day-to-day activities. This chapter explains the various approaches used by universities to acquire and develop real estate around their campuses and proposes a framework within which universities' real estate investment practices can be understood. The framework is based on case studies and in-depth investigation of real estate investment activities at five universities across the United States. While their experiences cannot be expected to represent hose of all universities, the case studies provide valuable insight into the broad issues that affect university real estate investment activities.
