ABSTRACT

Davenport Commons is an innovative model of community housing for both students and local residents that was developed on behalf of Northeastern University by a partnership of three local developers in Boston, Massachusetts. The project was developed in the neighboring community of Roxbury because the university has little available land inside its traditional campus boundaries. The completed project consists of 125 units of housing for 595 students and 15 staff; 75 owner-occupied townhouses; and 2,100 square feet of retail space. From start to finish the project was controversial, and it highlights a number of challenges faced by urban universities with a need to expand.
