ABSTRACT

FUNDAMENTAL as is the story of the rise of the new agencies of transportation to an understanding of American economic development, it must be emphasized that the foregoing account, which stresses construction, technical improvement, and financing, is but one important aspect of the transportation revolution. The impact of these developments on commerce and industry still remains to be examined. First, however, attention must be directed to the core of the revolutionary change itself, the cheapening and facilitating of the movement of goods and persons.
