ABSTRACT

The explanations on the subject of decolonization, the role of indigenous nationalism is one that has often been advanced. Singapore's plural communities experienced a new cultural awakening wrought largely by external stimuli arising from the lands from which they hailed. It was the very political turmoil and economic hardship that had driven them in the first place to seek refuge and opportunities in Singapore. During the last days of the Malayan campaign, the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) form an alliance with the British for the purpose of mobilizing the local Chinese population for civil defense and to help in the military defense of Singapore Island. As for Malaya and Singapore, it was clear that the British initially had every intention of returning as rulers and to remain so into the foreseeable future. The People's Action Party (PAP) had also showed the British that it was able to win the Singapore elections that saw the island achieving self-government.
