ABSTRACT
Tashi Tsering explains new freedom began on May 17, 1973. After months and then years of waiting with scarcely any hope of escape, things suddenly seemed to move with remarkable speed. Mr. Wang had no sooner finished filing the proper papers than he sent for belongings, which had been put in storage on my first day in the Sangyib prison. Although he had been released from prison, he was still labeled as the worst possible kind of criminal, a political enemy. He believed that his criminal record and official classification as a menial laborer were the keys. Two major policy changes came directly out of that congress. The first was that the Cultural Revolution was completely discredited. The second was that the party's official emphasis on class struggle was replaced by a push toward economic reconstruction. All the energy and resources that had fueled the class struggle would be shifted to help support policies for economic recovery and greater modernization.
