ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the interview with Marty Fisher who is director of Retail Learning at Starbucks. He is a gifted storyteller. This is a guy who understands the power of stories and makes it a part of his work. Marty communicates very effectively and naturally with stories. It is interesting that the first word he associates with stories is moral. Even when a story is used to encode information, it also functions as a tool for thinking. Hearing a story triggers our own experience and a set of associations. Marty also highlights how stories should be viewed as a two-way street. Stories allow us to exchange information, "telling stories allows people to share the context of where they're coming from, or on the other hand, listening to stories gives you the context for what the other person is trying to communicate". A story can be a short phrase or word.
