ABSTRACT

The Interaction Ring contains the competencies that are most noticeable by outside observers. Selecting, Telling, and Modeling describe how we use stories to communicate. All the other competencies have to be working in concert in order for us to be effective communicators and learners, regardless of how clever we are in selecting stories, how theatrically we tell them, what behaviors we model or analogies we use to explain ourselves. Personal Stories run the gamut from very recent experiences to experiences deep in our past. There is often a quality of vulnerability associated with sharing a personal story, especially ones from our past. The competencies in the Interaction Ring are the most visible but the least important. Selecting stories depends upon the existence of a rich index of stories that can only be gained through reflection, synthesis, and all of the listening competencies in the Core.
