On 28 January 1725 Peter died. A decree on this occasion stated: “Inasmuch as by the will of almighty God the most radiant, most regal Peter the Great, emperor and autocrat of all the Russias, our most merciful master, this January 28th departed this fleeting world for the blessings of eternity….”
