ABSTRACT

The Gospels are full of accounts of miracles. Biblical scholars consider that some of the stories in the New Testament may have been added later on; others may have been exaggerated accounts. A miracle is an event which happens against the laws of nature, and which is brought about by the action of the everlasting or timeless God. Sutherland wants to claim that human beings are free and always have the capacity for great good. The ability of the good to break through in any situation is where the true power of miracle lies. The Dominican priest, Gareth Moore, in his book Believing in God - a Philosophical Essay (T. & T. Clarke, 1989) has produced an interesting view of miracle which could be included under this heading. His approach is based on Wittgenstein's philosophy and he is firmly committed to the view that God is nothing.
