ABSTRACT

Peer review-the process of having historians familiar with the topic of a work comment critically on its value-is a powerful tool for maintaining quality control among historians. Historians regularly review the work of other historians in a wide variety of historical journals and periodicals. This complex process of peer review, which originated in the sciences, is widely used to check on the quality of research and writing. Often the review in advance of publication is “blind,” that is, the name of the reviewer is not revealed to the author. The review of a published book or article normally indicates the name of the reviewer.
