ABSTRACT

Think of some of the great friendships portrayed in literature, on film, and on television. Some are representative of same-sex friendships, while others depict cross-sex friendships. For example, from biblical literature, we have David and Jonathan and Ruth and Naomi. From now-classic films and television shows, we have the likes of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Batman and Robin, Thelma and Louise, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, and Captain Kirk and Dr. Spock. And in addition to the friendships depicted in now-vintage shows such as Friends and Seinfeld, there are more recent programs on television-Girls, The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Grey’s Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, and The New Girl, to name a few-all of which feature friend cliques.
