ABSTRACT
The gradual nature of emancipation meant that by 1810, approximately one-fourth of the African American population in the North remained enslaved. Free African American communities in the North nonetheless grew dramatically during the 1790s, with African American leaders such as Richard Allen and Absalom Jones forming in de pen dent black churches and other organizations dedicated to combating both slavery and discrimination.
