ABSTRACT
Only a tiny fraction of the innumerable infractions that take place every day in our society ever come before courts of law. But the few cases that do are of particular importance to the legal system and to the student of law. For one thing, these cases furnish the best documentation we have of the legal system at work. Even more important, they provide occasions on which judges make authoritative restatements of the scope and content of legal rules.
