ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about a man Samduk, younger brother of Ojaknyo, who working on Pak Hun's fence. Samduk was a strong lad two years ago when Hun returned to the village. That first spring Hun decided to try growing his own rice. He couldn't depend on the tenants, who could barely fulfill their grain quotas to the government. For the first time in his life Hun prepared a rice bed. He planted seedlings and stayed up late into the night to make sure the water was flowing properly. This is one of the stories written by the Korean writer of the 20th century, Hwang Sun-won. In the stories included in this book, he has portrayed an entire community caught in the political and social firestorm that brings out the selfishness, cruelty and ignorance of simple people, but also shows their loyalty and nobility.
