ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on organizational business leaders allows them to be more specific in their analysis and leadership guidelines than if the text focused on all types of leaders. It examines early leadership theories, starting with the three classical approaches to management: scientific management, administrative theory, and bureaucracy and it examine in greater detail more recent trait, behavioural, and contingency theories. The book presents the task-oriented behaviors of leaders. It discusses role clarification and the distinctions between informing, delegating, and problem-solving and focuses on the management of technical innovation and creativity and discusses the charismatic behaviors of leaders. The book provides the need for ethical behaviors and how to cope in suboptimal environs. Leadership is about motivating followers. It is about achieving results and it is about inspiring change.
