ABSTRACT

Adams, Ger r y (194 8 – ) Gerry Adams is the president of Sinn Féin, the political party representing the Irish Republican Movement in Northern Ireland. He was fi rst elected to this position in 1983. Adams is the Westminster member of Parliament for West Belfast but has not taken his seat because of Sinn Féin’s abstentionist stance in British government. He is also an elected member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, which sits in Stormont. Republicanism is a nationalist political orientation, the long-term goal of which is to reunify the six counties of Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland. In the short term, it aims to end the British presence in the North by encouraging the devolution of powers from London to Belfast and to replace it with a democratic form of governance involving the parties in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
