ABSTRACT

Arranged Marriage Gandhi’s family arranged his marriage to Kasturbai Makanji, when he was thirteen and she twelve, and in later life Gandhi would come to denounce the practice of child marriage found among some Hindu groups. He was a shy youth and an indifferent student. However, on the advice of family and friends and though facing initial opposition from his mother, Gandhi left for the United Kingdom to study law at the Inner Temple-a historic training institution-between 1888 and 1891. He returned to India for a brief time and found diffi - culty in establishing a practice, leading him to accept a job offer from a businessman in South Africa, which was also a British colony with a substantial Indian population.
