ABSTRACT

In affirming the inner light as authoritative, the Quakers also rejected taking strong stands on dogma, which they said leads to pride and the misuse of church authority. The name Quakers is thought to have originated as a pe-

in the presence of the Lord” or the assertion by Quakers that others should do so. It has come to be a name accepted by the Friends to denote their devotion to God. However, some divisions arose, particularly in the nineteenth century, in reference to how that devotion should be expressed. These divisions concerned the acceptance of universalism (the belief that all persons are saved), the extent to which Quakers should work with other Protestant groups, and the extent to which they should be involved in evangelical work.
