ABSTRACT

The RPE analysis of the capitalist organization of the labor process, profits, and competition is incomplete without an understanding of the critical role that the rest of society plays in capitalism. In the radical view a capitalist economy could not exist without a supporting set of “noneconomic” institutions or culture. A capitalist economy requires a capitalist society or system to function and reproduce itself over time. Capitalist power and domination of the labor process extends into these other spheres. Although the radical analysis in these areas is quite extensive, we will limit our discussion to the RPE theory of the state and two aspects of culture: ideology and patriarchy.
