Public policy is a course of action, regulatory measure, law, judicial decision, or funding priority that addresses a contemporary topic. Public policy actions such as new legislation, regulatory agency decisions, media coverage and even public opinion pertaining to a pressing issue can influence and affect a new product's commercial success. Intellectual property is critical in the course of product planning, especially when new technology development is involved and understanding how to protect such intellectual property is essential in order to ensure a competitive advantage.
