In the Spring of 1991, as I was preparing this manuscript for publication, the publisher of this series, Douglas Merwin, brought to my attention an article in the New York Times 1 that reassured me that the story of Lukang, while somewhat distant from many of my prospective readers, has resonances nearer to home.
