ABSTRACT

A mahjong game, on a grand scale, was in progress. There were three mahjong players: Yun Ch'angsik, the man of the house; Fatty Pak, a rich man and excellent at mahjong; and a harelip who was a professional gambler. Ten chon a point and five hundred won a game were the stakes; these players were not gambling for peanuts. The players had been joined by a half-dozen onlookers, some of whom were hoping for a little victory gift from the big winner. All three had the same bloodshot eyes, glazed over from lack of sleep, and all three faces had an oily shine. All three players seemed on the verge of going out, and Fatty Pak, breathing heavily, drew a tile from the pool. The players had been joined by a half-dozen onlookers, some of whom were hoping for a little victory gift from the big winner.
